Reasons to login and goal making

I thought that I would be different from the others. I thought that I would login to do things. I have to face the reality : I am connecting on Kronos only for raids and the social interactions.  I have joined the raid-logger pack. Now, it is not necessarily a bad thing and I do login on rare occasions for  other mishaps like world PvP or a couple AVs. The problem is that it doesn't seem to matter much to me. What mattered was raiding. Raiding offered me a personal challenge. Without it I am left without goals. And without goals I don't feel the drive to do much. The question then becomes : How do I find my next goal? What would be the common advices?

  • I could level another character to 60. But that takes way too long and for the most part it is boring and unchallenging to me
  •  I could do more PvP for ranks. But either I am not good enough or my gear doesn't allow me to survive long enough, or maybe I would be better with a different class (that I won't level)
  • I could challenge the best PvP players on the realm. But I would die in a second.
  • I could try getting pets or mounts. But I find that a felhunter, dreadsteed or succubus is plenty enough.
  • I could get more gold. But I don't need it.
  • I could find gear upgrades outside of raids. But either I'll have to farm heavily (Silithus bracers), or I will  have to spend hours for it (Valthalak's staff) and in the end I probably won't even notice the difference during raids
Tekai getting some PvP ran- wait no, *trying* to get some PvP rank
After writing this list it gets pretty clear to me that the problem is not that I cannot find goals. Rather it is that those goals are not meaningful enough to me. They are not tailored to me and as such they cannot work, they do not motivate and/or reward me.
Many players (me included) make the mistake of telling other players what goals they could have, and often it doesn't work.  It is a bit as if I told someone I didn't know anything about to do more sport. He has got no reason to, no motivation to. Without motivation, meaning or reward most behaviours will not happen.

I also notice something else : The reasons I give for not doing something do not match what I actually do. A couple days ago I did run 2x Stratholme to get a necklace upgrade, yet I knew I wouldn't notice the difference, and it did take hours. So I can't trust my first gut feeling. I have to trust what really makes me play. And finding what it is can be a hard endeavour. As might be illustrated by the level 60 players leaving Kronos. Or most players leaving a game.

Thinking about it I think the conclusion is that you can always find some goal and some motivation to play. Regardless of what content there is. There will always be something to do. You can play with blindfolds, you can play without sound, you can play with your feet, you can collect all items in the game, etc. A goal is never stupid, a goal is just a goal.

Taking my example into account maybe there is a different approach.

What if I found back what I did in the past, searched for what I liked and why and made goals that focused on that? What if I suggested to players to try out different things without specific goals until they find something they like? Why should I be unhappy that I only connect for raids if raids are fun for me? What if writing about the game or interviewing players is what interests me?

Who are the vanilla wow players on Kronos? (5) Novaskin

This is the 5th part of a multi-part blog serie dedicated to discovering the Kronos players, especially those that maybe would not come on the forums and talk about their experiences. See [Part 4 - Gorthaur] [Part 6 - A*] . I'm very grateful to Novaskin for accepting to answer my questions, thank you Novaskin!

What is your current character and talents?
My current character is Novaskin, a level 33 tauren beastmaster hunter. I decided to spec beastmaster because it makes leveling solo easy. Besides, I used to play beastmaster during vanilla when I did some raiding (up to BWL 4/8) and I have good memories of it.

Novaskin's current armory

Is this character an alt?
This character is my main. I have a level 14 shaman alt that I intend to level to 60 and spec restoration to heal raids. I also have a mage that I want to level for some raiding and PvP. Both of my alts will have professions to increase my development once I am at the maximum level.

Could you tell me a bit more about you?
I am Italian, I used to play in retail vanilla where I cleared MC, ZG, AQ20, Onyxia and BWL up to 4/8. I couldn't go any further because the Burning Crusade (TBC) expansion came out, besides I was quite young and didn't yet know much about english (it still lacks sometimes :P). I have a retail account that I played up until september and I own multiple level 100 characters with a lot of gold and almost every profession maxed out. I stopped playing on retail because I lost my interest about the game content. I now hope to clear the whole vanilla end game content more than I have ever hoped before!

What made you decide on this server?
I came to Kronos because I was looking for a server holding vanilla content with some qualities. I had heard about private servers and I investigated some forums and the web until I made my decision to try Kronos (who looked like one of the best). Here I hope to find a community  where interactions matter more than on the current official game and have to interact more with people to reach my aims. I'm very happy about this so far.

What are your current short-term and long-term objectives?
In the short term I want to get to level 60 in a very short time, level my professions to 300 and buy the level 40 mount. In the long-term I want to get the T0.5 gear set, get attunements for Onyxia, Molten Core and BWL, find a proper guild for raiding, level my alts to 60 or 35 with 300/300 professions, buy an epic mount and do some PvP.

What do you login for?
I login to to develop my main character as fast and best as I can and to meet players that could then become friends.

What was the hardest thing you've had to do on this server?
The hardest thing I have had to deal with was the impact of the old quest system. Indeed I had to work out a  proper way to level without wasting too much time on unworthy quests.

Did something make you wish to quit or switch server?
I haven't yet had a reason to quit this server. I found some minor bugs but they were absolutely bearable. For example I had an issue with my pet being bugged, I asked for help opening a ticket and I received effective assistance in less than a minute which made me feel really satisfied.

What was the last sad and happy moments you've had?
I really haven’t had any particularly negative experience yet, even if the leveling was at times quite hard. Perhaps this will have changed once I reach level 60. My latest positive experiences were when I found myself grouped up around the world with people to quest together, just like the old times and in a manner you cannot do in the current official World of Warcraft.

What was the best moment you've had so far on the server?
My best moment was when I realised that the server was really working and I found people fairly satisfied about it. I had previously believed that a quality vanilla WoW content would be completely lost. But I was wrong... finding this server was like a great memory I had stored somewhere that I just found again :) .

Would you like to add something?
I want to say I am satisfied to play on this server and I have had a good experience on it. Although some bugs did pop out sometimes I am still fine. I hope the best for this server and I hope I can help its population to grow by bringing in more and more people!

Are vanilla wow servers getting more bug-free?

World of Warcraft private servers have existed since at least 8 years. And yet today players still face some bugs ranging from pets killing themselves [1], NPCs not using any abilities [2] or spawning into trees [3] to raid bosses timers and spell mechanics tuned harder than expected or not working correctly [4]. This is not specific to a single server, it happens on all of them. Why is that?

First it is important to know that many private servers (but not all) use what is called cores (or tools to make it very simple) to emulate the game world. For example Mangos, Trinity and Arcemu are some of the currently prevalent cores. Those are often associated with on-going projects trying to improve them and some of those projects are open source (freely show their databases [where they keep data like players levels, item names, etc] and changes and share it with others, allow people to participate) and others are not. It is not unusual for private servers to use a core and then add their specific changes but to allow only specific members of their community to work on them (the developers). There are many reasons to do that : to preserve their work, to be the only ones with a specific function working (ex: BWL, AQ, line of sight), to go ahead independently of the core project, to make custom changes or fixes, etc.
This means that many changes and fixes are not available to other server creators. Thus some developers end up having to do fixes that have already been done before. And if a specific server has to be stopped then all the custom work they have done on the scripts (how a specific thing in the world should behave, ex: what a boss does when he is hit) and databases can be lost. The progress is not always linear, there are drawbacks (ex: on Kronos NPC's pets used to attack players correctly, after some change they no longer did, now they do it again). Sometimes this is actually a good thing if the fixes were of low quality, other times it is not.

Now there is something else to take into consideration : to make fixes you need developers or programmers. This is because to fix bugs you will need to make changes to the core, the database and the scripts. And those are written in a coded language that many do not understand and even less are capable to modify to reach specific goals. If you look at the Kronos main page you can see that they are looking for people that know C++, MySQL, Git and Mangos cores, have free time, creativity and are interested in developing the server [5]. If Kronos is still looking for those it is because it is difficult to find players that meet all of those criteria. Developers are scarce.

PHP / HTML coding, what hides behind most webpages.
Let us look further and focus on the process of change that I will illustrate with a picture about the nursing process, that I am quite familiar with.
The nursing process in 5 steps, can also be applied to explain other domains
For the players the first step is a) Assessment, this is when you play and then notice something strange. Maybe you do not care and go ahead, maybe you take a screenshot, make a video, discuss it with friends or go look online about it. This is the process of defining if it really is a bug or not according to your references and step b) Diagnosis. You may then think about sharing it with developers, this is step c) Planning. Sometimes you actually post it on the bugtracker [6] thus reaching step d) Implementation. Then you can check every now and then if the bug has been corrected (assuming it is one), this is the last step e) Evaluation.
5 floating wreckages, that sure is strange but is it really a bug? What if no one fished in days?
For the moderators their job begins once you have posted on the bugtracker, they read and look at what you have added, that is step a). They sometimes ask for more information (or search themselves) or tests to confirm whether you are facing a bug or not (they can be stuck on this step because reliable information about vanilla coming back from 2006 is missing), this is the process that leads to step b) where we make sure it is a bug and look for details about it (is it about a spell mechanic? is it about an item effect? etc.). They then also plan what to do with it step c), send it to the developers, step d) and check back sometime later, step e).
Facts checking, the moderator's hardest job
The developers will then see the bug report and gather information, steps a), specify what is the problem and what is the source of it, step b). Decide on what to do about it, step c), do some code modification and create fixes, step d) and check if it actually works, step e). Did you ever have some homework to do that you had to write and reread again and again and again? It is a bit like that, only with code, tests to do, a server to relaunch for most tries, other people making changes on your work, etc.

This takes time because all these steps happen in the reality of a time-bounded, reality-bounded world. All of those steps have been simplified in this blog post. Steps are sometimes missed, mistakes happen, people forget things, bug fixes sometimes lead to other bugs, interpretations happen, data is sometimes missing, real life takes over. Most of the participants are also not paid and have other jobs and priorities or interests, etc.

So when players often quick changes this is perfectly understandable. But it is important that they keep in mind that the process leading to effective and professionnal changes on private servers can be long and arduous, filled with potential human, software or hardware errors. It depends on a miriad of factors, some of which can hardly be changed. A heavily wanted quick fix can be thought of as bandage. If someone is bleeding and you add bandages he will stop bleeding and have a short term relief, but if the cause was that an artery was cut open and it still leaks blood this will likely not help in the long term, unless you do something more.

Now a last thought... What if an NPC is not casting fireballs if you never encounter it? Does that really affect your game experience? Are you really looking for a perfect server? Or are you looking for a server where you have fun, even if some bugs do happen on occasions? Where do you draw the line and why? Take the time to think about it.

Personal thought progression about private servers

I have recently noticed something quite unusual about my thought process when I play on private servers. It seems that it keeps following some kind of pattern going from a micro point of view (only seeing what's in front of my eyes) to a macro one (holistic one, trying to see the whole world and all its different connections), and going from my own wishes up until big general ideas that could influence everyone.

And I have made a rough flowchart about it (my first one ever!).

Who are the vanilla wow players on Kronos? (4) Gorthaur

This is the fourth part of a multi-part blog serie dedicated to discovering the Kronos players, especially those that maybe would not come on the forums and talk about their experiences. See [Part 1 - Tekai] [Part 2 - Jakeltank] [Part 3 - Cruelfate] and [Part 5 - Novaskin]. I am very grateful to Gorthaur for taking the time to answer my questions, thank you Gorthaur!

What is your current character and talents? Why did you decide on those ?
My current character is Gorthaur, a level 22 undead affliction warlock in the guild <Bubbles>. I always thought warlocks were fun to play but I couldn't level one very far in vanilla as I had a hunter main. I now want to experience the feelings I had in vanilla again and have a chance to level a warlock to 60, that is why I created this character.
The current level 22 Gorthaur
Is this character an alt? Do you have alts ? Can you tell me more about them ?
In a way this character is and isn't an alt. My first character on this server was a hunter. I tried to get the same experience I had in vanilla on it, in a nostalgic fashion. But then I rerolled warlock because I felt I was missing the « vanilla warlock » feeling even more.

Could you tell me a bit more about you?
I'm a 27 year old guy from Norway. I started playing on WoW when it first came out and I can still remember the thrill of that first experience and how we then talked about it at school. That thrill has followed me up until now and I'm trying to find it again.

What made you decide on this server? How did you find out about it ?
I got to know this server through friends who started playing on Nostalrius. After I heard about their experiences I made some research about vanilla servers and I tried to compare them. I found Kronos to be the more comprehensive and thorough re-experience of vanilla. For example the scripting and bug tracking system seems better here and I have heard the community is lower but also more « tightly knit ». Overall this server seemed to offer a very good quality product, to say it differently.

What are your current short-term (days/weeks) and long-term (months) objectives in-game?
At the moment I am enjoying the leveling and revisiting the zones and dungeons. When I hit level 60 I will try to do some raiding and get the hard-earned tier-sets. I never raided past MC in vanilla so I look forward to progressing through raids here.

What do you login for? Or the last time you logged on, what did you do?
I log on to level my character and gain profession skills. The last time I logged on I did SFK with some of my friends (a level 40 mage and a tank). The run went well. I did have mixed results getting parties in general as sometimes there aren't enough players online to do a specific dungeon. That's when it helps to have friends on the server, just like on my SFK run :) .

What was the hardest thing you've had to do on this server? Can you be specific ?
The elite quests I tried to solo were the most difficult thing I have had to do on the server. Yesterday I tried to do the last Kolkar quest in the barrens (Counterattack!) with my voidwalker and using fears, but Krom'zar was hitting way too fast and resisted. I then tried to kite him on my hunter but to no avail. I had to ask for help.

… In some ways it is part of what I wanted here, a dangerous world where you have to think before acting, where what you do matters. I don't mind being killed and events tipping against my favor.

Did something make you wish to quit or switch server?
In terms of difficulty nothing made me wish to change servers, I like encountering something hard, unless it is broken or not working correctly. I did consider Nostalrius, but only because of its population.

What was the last sad and happy moments you've had in-game? (positive or negative experiences)
My latest positive moment was switching to a warlock and rediscovering the vanilla warlock feeling. I haven't had any particularly negative experience yet.

What was the best moment you've had so far on the server? Can you be specific ?
It is hard to pick one. Maybe the first time that my friends and I got together for SM : Library with my hunter, I felt a surge of nostalgia at that moment :) .

Would you like to add something?
I look forward to getting the same nostalgic feelings and good times as I advance in the game!

Infinite Alterac Valley

[ Alterac Valley sometimes lasted days or even a full week ] [...]
On Kronos the longest Alterac Valley battleground I have heard of was 8h long. And that was an outlier. Most of our AVs are much shorter, mostly because players are doing the exact same thing as they are on retail, that is : they stack up, run to the other faction base, get the closest graveyard, summon everyone (I like feeling useful and doing this part), break the two towers and stack in them, overwhelm the few defenders, get the last graveyard before the faction leaders, aggro them and the job is done.
Here shown : The tower strategy
Obviously there are a few players that stand out of the pack and get some kills or run to cap other graveyards, but they don't make much difference. In the end it is a matter of who can get first to the towers and cap the graveyard. What changes from battle to battle is how much defense there is on one side or the other. If the defense is high then the battle staggers until players leave, abandon or some (lucky) strategy leads to a graveyard recap. Assuming this situation persists then the battleground will still end in hours due to the server population being too low to accomodate for constant 40x40 PvP fights.
A typical 1h AV with Vanndar rush and a couple defenders. Hint : We lost to a couple seconds.
It is likely that longer Alterac Valleys could happen, but with the current conditions (zerging, population limits, stable playerbase) such will not happen in the short term. And as long as zerging the other faction's base gives the quickest amount of honor there is few incentive to change strategy. Thus I expect most future AVs to be shorter than 3 hours, likely never more than 24h.

The sense of community on Kronos at low levels

There is this impression that vanilla servers held a close community where players knew eachother well and had to maintain good reputation so as to be invited in groups. I will be discussing this point with the point of view of my leveling on Kronos.

While leveling I have to admit that I met a very limited amount of players, maybe 1-3 per area, with the exception of Stranglethorn Vale that for some reason was filled with Alliance (meaning I got to have some free spontaneous PvP action a.k.a. ganking :D and I loved it) and the Hinterlands where I spent way too much time hunting trolls and hoping for lucky mushroom/cauldron respawns in spontaneous groups (damn those mushrooms, did Blizzard ever think that 4 in the whole area is enough for 5 people? It ain't !) if I wasn't running away from a gnome warlock that had sliiiiiiightly more mount speed than me. On those occasions I remember only good interactions with the other Horde players, they were patient, comprehensive and fun to play with.
Free chest for Mangochutney :D
Most of the time I was able to solo quests and elites either with the voidwalker or using some sort of shadowbolt-chain-fear, meaning I didn't have much reason to group either. And it took me less than a month to make it to level 60, that may have had its influence. Then again I did join groups for Ragefire Chasm, the Wailing Caverns, the Scarlet Monastery, Zul'Farrak and Blackrock Depths (in retrospective it's impressive how many dungeons I did considering how long they could take), but I didn't keep much contact with those players, however friendly they were. All dungeons could be completed, players always ended up coming (sometimes with a help of a summon) and very few ever left. I can't remember seeing a ninja.
My second dungeon ever on this server, great run except for the murloc boss wipe. Fatshammy, Chargebead and Commonwealth are now 29, 22 and 24, they haven't played in over a month. Rainforest seems to have deleted his character.
My closest contact during this period was a warrior I met in Stranglethorn while looking for iron bars or such to whom I sent my excess raptor meat and food, he then needed bags which I could make and thus we met again and again, we started joking (how on earth is he using 20+ bags? Stacking ogre's panties?), talking about Warcraft, doing dungeons together, etc. He even invited me to his guild to start raiding afterwards, but my playtimes did not match.

In the end I would say that at level 60 I had 4-5 friends overall that I had met during my leveling, one of which I would never see online again (a warlock that had helped me back at level 20 when the Stonetalon's tarentulas all wanted me dead). I had mostly good interactions with others, but occasions were sparse, I spent the greatest part of my time alone.

So, the sense of community while leveling ? While players were frienldy and very nice overall I have to say that I did not find much interactions in my experience, I knew pretty much no one and had few contacts outside of dungeons but it is true that I leveled up way too fast, that as warlock I have it easy and that I had no guild and it may have negatively contributed. Besides, many leveling players stopped they journey and I did not get to see them again.
